Real-world progress from our labs, field sites, and partners

  • Research led by Dr. Hector Barrios-Garrido, Senior Marine Megafauna Specialist at KAUST Beacon Development (KBD), is strengthening science-led coastal planning in partnership with Neom Nature Reserve. Satellite tracking of marine turtles in the northeastern Red Sea delivers decision-ready data to guide marine spatial planning and ensure development aligns with long-term ecosystem resilience.

  • KAUST Beacon Development was proud to be represented by Dr. Eslam O. Osman at an IUCN regional workshop in Jordan, where he was invited to speak on coral resilience in the Red Sea. The workshop contributes to the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR) program in the Gulf of Aqaba, implemented by UNDP Jordan. Working alongside partners from IUCN and UNDP, Dr. Osman shared science-based insights on climate-resilient reef systems and explored practical pathways to protect one of the world’s most unique coral ecosystems. This collaboration reflects KAUST Beacon Development’s commitment to translating cutting-edge research into actionable policy and sustainable development solutions — safeguarding Red Sea coral reefs for future generations.

  • KAUST Beacon Development (KBD) is leading efforts to turn abundant Red Sea seaweed into economic and environmental value. Working with researchers and local partners, KBD harvests underused Sargassum—often discarded or left to decay—and converts it into materials for agriculture, food, and sustainable textiles. Supported by KAUST, the initiative creates coastal jobs, supports a circular economy, reduces pressure on fisheries, and advances low-carbon, seaweed-based industries along Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast.
