Decoding the Red Sea’s Fish: Building the Region’s First Genetic Reference Library

Accurate fish species identification and understanding population connectivity are essential for sustainable Red Sea fisheries. Many species look alike, making traditional identification unreliable and limiting effective stock assessments and conservation planning.

KBD Labs uses advanced genetic tools to precisely identify fish species and map their population structures. This work underpins the first genetic reference library for Red Sea fish, supporting fisheries management and Saudi Vision 2030.

Project Details and Methods

KBD Labs applies DNA barcoding and next-generation sequencing to identify fish species with high accuracy, including those with overlapping or ambiguous morphologies.

We collect tissue samples across diverse habitats—coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves, and pelagic zones—to capture regional diversity.

Population genetics (mitochondrial & nuclear markers) is then used to assess connectivity, diversity, and stock boundaries.

Challenges & Solutions:

Impact

This project is creating a standardized genetic database that transforms how Red Sea fisheries are studied and managed.

What it Enables

By building the Red Sea’s first fish genetics reference library, KBD Labs is laying the foundation for genomics-driven marine resource management in Saudi Arabia.

  • Why this matters

Accurate genetic identification strengthens fisheries management, protects biodiversity, and supports sustainable harvests. By revealing true species identities and population boundaries, this work enables smarter conservation decisions and advances Saudi Arabia’s Blue Economy goals.

  • Impact

    Design for Net-Positive

Plan to avoid, restore, and enhance not just offset.

    Nature First

Priority zones protect Blue Carbon habitats and species of concern.

    Proof, Not Promises

Transparent data and audits steer approvals and adaptive management.
